About Cape Coast Castle Ghana

I was not there when it all began. But I can imagine how this small trading lodge was gradually enlarged until it finally became a fortification. I can imagine how it changed tenancy over time starting with the Dutch to the Swedes and various European powers until 1664 when it was captured by the British and renamed Cape Coast Castle.

As we took a stroll round this great fort, my Ghanian guide told me how the Castle served as the seat of the then Gold Coast before the seat of government was moved to Accra on March 19 1877. In the not-too distant past (1974), this Cape Coast Castle came to have an archeological and ethnographic museum so impressive that it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The facilities found here are Library, guided tours, book store, gift shops and Admission is free.
